2015: Year in Review

February 01, 2016 · 0 Comments

How was your January, Truck Girls? Are you staying true to your resolutions?

While the cold temperatures and massive snowbanks have prevented us from popping up street side, we spent the last 31 days reflecting on what a whirlwind 2015 was and started planning for an epic 2016 adventure.

We're not the kind of girls to kiss and tell or reveal too much too soon so our future plans will stay hushhush for now but we wanted to take a minute to say THANK YOU for making our 2nd year even better than the 1st and invite you to take a peek in our rear view mirror one last time before we hit the road:

2015 Recap

Viva Las Vegas! Our first buying show (and mega bucket list moment) happened when we visited North America's largest retail trade show MAGIC. An incredible experience meeting and greeting fashion's greatest (yes, we TOTALLY fan girled over Joe Zee!) led us to picking up new accessories lines Modern Opus, Jaeci, Jax Kelly and solidifying our relationship with LA based apparel brands Umgee, YA Los Angeles, Everly, Flying Tomato and other favorites that will be on board again for our 2016 season

Touchdown Toronto! Futurpreneur is one of the organizations we received funding from (along with Enterprise SJ) when we first started our business planning. Every year, Futurpreneur hosts an incredible event for young entrepreneurs called the Action Entrepreneurship Summit where:
"Over 230 participants, representing all provinces and the Northwest Territories came together to prioritized promising opportunities to expand youth entrepreneurship and agree on an action plan to drive entrepreneurship in Canada forward. Based on the results of the Summit and other Action Entrepreneurship initiatives, Futurpreneur Canada released a national action plan to expand youth entrepreneurship"

2015 was our 2nd appearance at the summit, it's an inspiring event that always leaves us with new connections and pages of ideas to bring back to Saint John! (In a happy coincidence Toronto was celebrating "Food Truck Freedom Day" while we were visiting. Multiple trucks [and hundreds of people] gathered at City Hall to celebrate relaxed by-laws allowing trucks more freedom to park and vend. Of course we made it a point to celebrate right along with them and wish for this kind of vision to come to life in SJ!)

You can find out more about Futurpreneur and the Summit here:

We were invited to present at the Millidgeville North Career Fair! It's one of our mandates as business owners to encourage as many youth as we can to consider entrepreneurship as a future endeavor and this was a great start. Not only did we have a booth set up inside to meet and greet the students but we brought the pink beauty along to give them a tour and let them know that no dream is too big, too crazy or too pink to come true

And then, In Pursuit hit the runway for the very first time! Our clothes were featured on stunning NWH models and we were BEAMING with pride! The show took place at the Trade and Convention Center; we couldn't drive in but the venue gave us lots of room to set up shop inside! (If you haven't heard, Normand Hector the founder and fearless leader of NWH recently celebrated the opening of his official studio Uptown, complete with runway! Bravo to you, Normand!)

Our first national magazine article! A Twitter follower tipped us off that we were included in a round-up of "Canada's Coolest" Mobile Boutiques and we couldn't believe it! (If you stopped in a retail store and noticed a Canadian Living opened to our page - we're guilty!) You can see the electronic version of the article here:

Website relaunch! While we had a basic templated website when we started, it wasn't giving us the warm and fuzzies and we didn't feel like it celebrated our message, our girl bossness or our wicked style properly. We reached out to Kaylyn from Gold Prism Collective and she created the masterpiece we have now! (Seriously, Kaylyn is a gem and we adored the entire experience of working with her - have a peek at her FB!

Our return to Fredericton's Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival was just as exciting as we hoped! This time, live entertainment was set up directly across from the truck and the crowds were wild all day, every day! We already have a big pink heart circled around the dates for this year's festival and are counting down the days until our next trip to the capital!

Harvesting the Arts was the truck's first ever public appearance in 2013. It's an event we hold dear to our hearts and support unconditionally as a true testament of community engagement and all the incredible things that can happen when everyone comes together to celebrate Saint John and Uptown. It was the most perfect Fall day!

And then came more press! We were featured on Huddle! It's such a thrill to be able to tell our story and this time it was a little more in depth than previous articles have been. Thanks, Cherise!

We were delighted to find out we were finalists for Saint John Board of Trade Outstanding Business Awards! While we didn't come home with a trophy, it was an extraordinary compliment and the opportunity to be in the room with over 400 community leaders was definitely a memorable experience!

November / December

These months give us a perfect opportunity to show the truck off in different areas of the city we don't normally get to during the rest of the year (mostly due to by-laws and parking restrictions). We try to sign up for as many vendor events, craft fairs and bazaars as possible, particularly ones where there is a special cause attached to the event and our vendor fee goes towards improvements or specific goals of an organization. This year, we drove straight into Harbour Station for a THIRD time to attend Rhoda's Christmas and then traveled to KV, the East Side, the West Side and back again and again! We even made it to Fredericton for a second time!

We can hardly wait for what 2016 has in store. Make sure you're following along on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so you don't miss a minute of our roadtrip adventure!

Here's to living your dreams out loud and having the best year yet,

Truck Girl
